Mean and evil
I truly dislike rude people who take up three seats on the subway when it is busy.
(I dislike them when it is not busy, but it is unforgivable during peak hours).
If they do not want people that close to them then they should either stand or not take the subway (I realize that is not a viable option always) or just suck it up and go home and shower and scrub with lye and bleach if they need to get the stink of others off of them.
Sheesh.

People who sit on the outside seats and then glare at you when you ask to sit on the inside seat are also very annoying.
Do what I do just play the game and pretend you expect them to move the stuff as you are about to sit down (sort of the same way they pretend not to notice people looking). If they give you a lokk, push the stuff to the side.

Yes, and on the streetcar too. I just don't get the antisocial behaviour. Sure we all want a seat to ourselves, but like you note, don't take public transportation if it's that traumatic for you.
